Principal's Message

E4

Welcome to Barbara Comstock Morse Elementary, home of the Owls, where our students are immersed in a college-going culture and are reminded daily that Knowledge is Power. As we move forward, the expectations are higher and the curriculum is more challenging. Students must use their creativity, strong focused work skills, their understanding of Common Core Standards and positive character as they evolve into future leaders of great character.

New Changes on the Horizon

All elementary schools in Elk Grove Unified School District have one day with a shortened day. Barbara Comstock Morse has a Late Start Thursday every Thursday all year.  This change was made to give teachers more time to work together in teams and improve the way we save or students in the classroom teachers  share effective ideas and write plans together.

Your students are receiving high standards-based instruction aligned with Common  Core.  Each grade level has an instruction time each day called ELD/WIN (English Language Development/What I Need). Students rotate to different classes throughout the year for instruction based on their academic needs. In additon to standards-based instruction, we offier Accelerated Reading (AR) is an incentive program to encourage students to read self-selected literature at their reading level. I-Ready, is a computerized reading program that students can access at home or school to work on individualized reading skills.  Please see your child’s teacher if you have any questions about these programs.

The learning doesn’t end at the conclusion of our instructional day.  We have many exciting and engaging after school programs including: clubs, team sports, choir,  an accelerated Math Academy, an Honors Society,  and targeted  intervention programs to give student additional learning experiences after school.

We encourage our parents to volunteer during the school day and to attend parent workshops to better understand how to optimize lifelong learning opportunities beyond the elementary school foundation. There are site based, regional, and district-wide professional development courses for teachers and parents, as shared stakeholders.

In conjunction with our various parent advisories, we offer serveral opportunities to enhance the learning, parent leadership, and build community partnership. These events include our Back To School Nite, the Rhythms of The World Multi-Cultural Family Night, the Kindergarten Harvest Festival, the Fall Jog-A-Thon, the Spring Carnival, and a host of Parent University workshops. Please consider attending the events as well as joining one the many parent advisories to offer your input as a shared decision- maker for our school community.

Please do not hesitate to call me or e-mail me at kumi@egusd.net,  if I can be of assistance to you or if you would like to participate as a parent leader at Barbara Comstock Morse Elementary.

Attitude Affects Learning;  Learning  Brings Knowledge;  Knowledge is Power!
